In a bid to reshape the geopolitical landscape of the Middle East, Chinese President Xi Jinping has advocated for a novel security framework that hinges on cooperation, dialogue, and respect for national sovereignty. Meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi in Cairo, Xi outlined a four-point strategy aimed at enhancing regional security collaboration, addressing interconnected conflicts, fostering economic growth, and boosting international coordination. The Chinese leader emphasized the importance of regional countries taking a more active role in their own security matters, while firmly opposing interference from external powers. Central to his vision is the resolution of the Palestinian issue, which he views as crucial for alleviating broader tensions in the Middle East.
China has signaled its readiness to work alongside Middle Eastern nations to safeguard international shipping routes and tackle the underlying causes of conflict, all while promoting economic development. Xi underscored that the United Nations Charter and international law should continue to serve as the cornerstone for addressing regional challenges. The discussions in Cairo also placed a significant emphasis on bolstering the economic ties between China and Egypt, with Xi advocating for expanded collaboration in sectors such as infrastructure, energy, agriculture, communications, electric vehicles, green energy, aerospace, and the digital economy.
China’s economic relationship with Egypt is marked by its status as the latter’s largest trading partner and primary source of imports for 14 years running. Bilateral trade between the two nations has witnessed significant growth, rising from $10.21 billion in 2013 to $20.79 billion in 2025. This economic partnership is set to deepen further, as evidenced by the signing of over 20 cooperation agreements encompassing areas like artificial intelligence, trade, technology, education, transportation, and industrial supply chains.
The two countries also issued a joint statement reaffirming their commitment to strengthening a comprehensive strategic partnership. This collaboration underscores the mutual benefits both nations hope to achieve through increased economic integration and shared strategic interests. As Xi and El-Sisi continue to fortify bilateral ties, their cooperative efforts are likely to have a lasting impact on the broader Middle Eastern region, potentially setting a new precedent for how nations in this area engage with global powers.
