In a bid to fortify relations with China, India has underscored the importance of peace and tranquillity along their shared border. This declaration came as India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval engaged in talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing. These discussions are part of the ongoing dialogue between the two nations, marking the 25th round of talks specifically dedicated to resolving their protracted boundary dispute. Key topics on the agenda included efforts to delineate the boundary more clearly, enhance border management, and expand collaborative efforts across the boundary.
The discussions saw both countries reflecting positively on recent progress in bilateral relations. They explored strategies to uphold stability along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and reiterated their commitment to pursuing a political resolution to the boundary issue, considering the long-term interests of both nations. These talks build on the foundation laid by the 2024 understanding between India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and China’s President Xi Jinping, aimed at de-escalating tensions in the Ladakh sector. Following this agreement, various activities such as people-to-people exchanges, the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra, and border trade via designated routes have resumed.
Ajit Doval emphasized that the gradual normalization of bilateral ties is closely linked to maintaining peace along the border. On the other hand, China maintained that the boundary issue should be contextualized within the larger framework of the bilateral relationship. Despite the constructive dialogue, neither side divulged substantial details regarding the actual demarcation of the disputed boundary. Nevertheless, both countries consented to continue negotiations, planning to hold the next round of special representative talks in India in 2027.
These diplomatic engagements come at a time when President Xi Jinping is slated to visit India for the BRICS summit in September. This upcoming visit adds another layer of significance to the current efforts to stabilize and improve bilateral relations. The continuance of these talks and the commitment to dialogue are reflective of the broader aim to foster a more cooperative and stable relationship, which both countries see as beneficial for their long-term strategic interests.
