As the global landscape of trade and technology continues to evolve, Malaysia and China are strengthening their bilateral ties. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is currently in China on a three-day working visit, reflecting the ongoing commitment to enhance economic relations between the two nations. This visit underscores the importance of collaboration in areas like artificial intelligence and digital trade.

During his trip, Anwar, who also serves as Malaysia’s finance minister, will engage in pivotal discussions aimed at boosting trade and investment. He is scheduled to meet with Chinese Premier Li Qiang in Hangzhou on Thursday, a key event highlighting the diplomatic aspect of his visit. The two leaders are expected to address mutual interests and explore new avenues of cooperation in emerging technologies, which are crucial for both countries’ economic strategies.

In Shanghai, Anwar will participate in the WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 event, where he is set to deliver a keynote address at the WorldSkills Conference. His involvement in this global platform underscores Malaysia’s commitment to advancing skill development and technological innovation. These engagements are part of a broader agenda to showcase Malaysia’s potential as a destination for foreign investment, particularly in the technology sector.

The prime minister’s itinerary also includes a stop in Hangzhou for the Fifth Global Digital Trade Expo, where Malaysia holds the distinction of being one of the Guest Countries of Honour. This expo serves as a crucial platform for discussing the future of digital trade, an area where Malaysia and China are keen to expand their collaborative efforts.

China has been Malaysia’s largest trading partner for 17 consecutive years, a testament to the robust economic relationship between the two countries. From January to August this year, bilateral trade reached an impressive US$113.82 billion. Anwar’s visit is expected to further solidify this economic partnership, with a focus on encouraging greater investment from Chinese business and technology leaders into Malaysia.
