As Chinese President Xi Jinping embarked on a visit to Cairo, he emphasized the importance of enhancing the long-standing alliance between China and Egypt. Upon arrival, Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, were received by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and his spouse. This visit underscores the commemoration of 70 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
In anticipation of his visit, President Xi highlighted the resilience of the China-Egypt relationship amid shifting global dynamics. He advocated for a reinvigorated effort to deepen their comprehensive strategic partnership, aiming to explore new avenues of collaboration. Emphasizing their mutual pursuit of significant national development objectives, Xi urged both countries to synchronize their developmental strategies.
Xi also encouraged an increased partnership under the Belt and Road Initiative, focusing on practical projects with the potential for enduring economic impact. He proposed expanding cooperation in diverse sectors such as education, tourism, science and technology, healthcare, sports, and archaeology, which he believes would enhance mutual understanding and fortify the bond between the peoples of China and Egypt.
Addressing the strategic significance of their relationship, Xi underscored the necessity for China and Egypt to support each other on major international issues, safeguarding their shared interests. He positioned Egypt as a pivotal partner not only in bolstering China’s relations with the Arab world but also with Africa. Furthermore, both nations, as key members of the Global South, have crucial roles in fostering global peace and stability through enhanced coordination on international matters and multilateral cooperation.
Xi’s visit aims to further consolidate the political and economic ties between Beijing and Cairo, potentially unlocking new opportunities in trade, infrastructure, technology, and other areas. He expressed China’s readiness to collaborate with Egypt to build upon the seven decades of diplomatic engagement, injecting renewed energy into their strategic partnership.
