These sophisticated machines achieved feats that outstripped some of the most celebrated human athletic performances, including breaking Usain Bolt’s 100-meter sprint record of 9.58 seconds and Wayde van Niekerk’s 400-meter record of 43.03 seconds.
With such rapid developments, competition among Chinese robotics companies is heating up as they vie for dominance in this burgeoning sector. The impressive capabilities of these robots have sparked a debate about whether humanoid robotics is on the brink of its own transformative moment akin to an “iPhone moment.” This term, coined by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang in 2023, describes a groundbreaking technological leap that propels an innovation from being nascent to becoming a mainstream staple, thereby reshaping industries and user experiences.
Wang Xingxing, the founder and CEO of Unitree Robotics, a prominent player in the Chinese humanoid robot market, has provided insights into this potential turning point. Speaking at the 2026 World Robot Conference in Beijing on August 20, Wang expressed optimism tempered with caution. He suggested that embodied intelligence might achieve a similar breakthrough to the phenomenon experienced with ChatGPT within the next two to three years. However, he also allowed for the possibility that it could take as long as five to 10 years if the pace of development slows.
Unitree Robotics, which has been at the forefront of these innovations, recently celebrated a significant financial milestone. Just a day before Wang’s comments, the company made a remarkable entry onto the Shanghai Stock Exchange’s STAR Market. Its shares saw an extraordinary rise, closing at 460 percent above the initial offering price. This financial success underscores the growing confidence and interest in the potential of humanoid robotics, further fueling the race towards achieving the next big breakthrough in the field.
