China has secured a historic milestone by advancing to the quarterfinals of the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup for the first time. This achievement came after a tense match against France, held in Rabat, which ended in a 4-3 victory for China in a penalty shootout following a goalless draw.
The standout performer for China was goalkeeper Niu Ziqi, who played a pivotal role by saving two crucial penalties. Her efforts ensured China’s progression to the tournament’s last eight. Throughout regular time, both teams had several attacking opportunities but struggled to find the back of the net. France dominated the first half, yet failed to capitalize on their chances. In the second half, China improved following tactical adjustments by coach Ma Xiaoxu, but neither team managed to score, leading to the decisive penalty shootout.
During the shootout, China’s Liu Yuxi and Liu Yuke successfully converted their opening attempts. Niu Ziqi saved France’s effort from Lea Motyka, and as the teams remained level at 2-2, Yang Lan and Cheng Wandi scored their penalties, while Niu produced another crucial save against Lisa Mabilon to seal China’s 4-3 win.
China’s path to the knockout stage was marked by impressive performances, having topped Group E with three consecutive victories. The team defeated Kenya 3-0, Samoa 7-0, and the United States 3-2, securing the top spot and demonstrating their strong form going into the elimination rounds.
Looking ahead, China will face Brazil in the quarterfinals on November 1. Brazil secured their place in the last eight after an intense match against Poland, which also ended in a penalty shootout following a 3-3 draw, with Brazil eventually triumphing 8-7.
