Keir Starmer has dismissed fresh leadership speculation, praising Andy Burnham’s work and urging party members to stop briefing against one another.

Burnham’s unwillingness to rule out future leadership ambitions sparked conversation across Westminster. His comments arrive as Labour grapples with slipping poll numbers and an imminent budget.

Speaking aboard his flight to the G20 summit, Starmer praised Burnham’s response to the synagogue attack in Manchester, saying they coordinated closely.

He urged MPs to reject rumours, particularly those suggesting Wes Streeting is preparing a move. Starmer emphasised that tackling the cost-of-living crisis should remain the top priority.

Burnham continued promoting his growth plan for Manchester but avoided offering clarity about his long-term political intentions, keeping speculation active.
