South Korean officials said Friday that President Lee Jae Myung could meet Chinese President Xi Jinping later this year if Xi proceeds with a planned visit to South Korea. It would mark Xi’s first visit to the country since 2014.

Wi Sung-lac, head of the presidential National Security Office, noted that while details remain under discussion, a bilateral meeting is possible during Xi’s stay. The Chinese leader has been invited to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Gyeongju from Oct. 31 to Nov. 1, where leaders from across the region, including the United States, will gather.

South Korea’s foreign minister earlier said China had assured Xi’s attendance at the APEC event in principle, with further coordination expected in the weeks ahead.
