The United States government has introduced a series of tariffs reaching up to 100% on certain categories of drones and their components, a move aimed at addressing national security concerns and reducing reliance on international supply chains that are heavily influenced by China. These tariffs are specifically directed at larger unmanned aircraft systems, particularly those exceeding 25 kilograms and featuring advanced capabilities such as thermal imaging and docking stations. While these larger drones will be subject to the maximum 100% tariff, smaller drones will incur a 25% tariff.
Tariffs are also being imposed on drone products and components originating from several key international partners. Items imported from the European Union, Japan, Liechtenstein, South Korea, Switzerland, and Taiwan will face a 15% tariff, while those from the United Kingdom will encounter a 10% tariff, contingent upon the hardware, software, and technology being sourced from these countries or the United States. These new tariffs are scheduled to be implemented on September 3.
The White House has stated that these measures are designed to bolster the United States’ defense and industrial base, promote domestic manufacturing of drones, and create jobs within the country. This effort is part of a broader strategy to lessen dependency on foreign suppliers. Presently, China holds a substantial share of the global drone market, with Shenzhen-based DJI leading the US commercial drone sector. DJI has previously been the subject of US governmental restrictions, stemming from concerns over national security.
US authorities have raised alarms that drones manufactured abroad could pose threats related to espionage, the unauthorized gathering of sensitive data, and potential offensive uses. In line with these concerns, the US Federal Communications Commission has advocated for increased domestic production of drones to mitigate such risks.
The introduction of these tariffs occurs amidst ongoing trade and technology disputes between the United States and China. In a related development, China has recently enacted measures that restrict drone exports to the US and has taken steps against several American companies, further escalating tensions between the two nations.
