Trump-Taiwan Call Risks Economic Tensions with China

The Chinese government has issued a caution to the United States regarding the handling of Taiwan-related issues following former U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of his intent to speak with Taiwan’s leader, Lai Ching-te. Such interactions are particularly sensitive for Beijing, as it views Taiwan as part of its territory and opposes any formal international contact with its leadership.

China considers Taiwan a breakaway province destined for eventual reunification with the mainland, potentially by force. As such, Beijing consistently objects to foreign governments engaging with Taipei in a manner that suggests Taiwan is an independent nation. This stance was reiterated by Chinese officials, who warned that any direct communication between Trump and Lai could send “wrong signals” to those supporting Taiwan’s independence and meddle in China’s internal matters.

Over the last few years, tensions surrounding Taiwan have escalated. In 2022, China conducted significant military exercises around the island following a visit from a prominent U.S. official, and Beijing has repeatedly expressed opposition to American arms sales and political support for Taiwan. Despite these tensions, Taiwan maintains it is a self-governing democracy, officially known as the Republic of China, and its government rejects Beijing’s sovereignty claims, asserting its people’s right to elect their leaders and engage in international diplomacy.

The United States adheres to the “One China” policy, which involves recognizing Beijing diplomatically while keeping unofficial ties with Taiwan. Under the Taiwan Relations Act, the U.S. also provides Taiwan with defensive weapons. Trump’s previous interaction with a Taiwanese leader occurred in 2016, when he spoke with then-President Tsai Ing-wen, an unusual move that drew criticism from China. Any new conversation between Trump and Lai could further exacerbate U.S.-China tensions and potentially provoke additional Chinese military maneuvers near Taiwan.
